Partnerships Creating Pathways to Practice in Equine Assisted Services

Monday 3rd June 2024

One Equine Trust has collaborated on a second workshop with CAFRE: College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise to provide an opportunity for learning, networking and collaborating with other professionals in Equine Assisted Services (EAS). We want to emphasise the impact, importance and potential for multidisciplinary and collaborative working models in EAS. Through examples of current working collaborations and hearing from professionals on business development, practitioner insurance and legal requirements, this event aims to demonstrate the potential and clarify the practical elements needed to develop these models, leaving all attendees with the information, ability and connections to enhance their practice and create a sustainable EAS practice in NI.

See the information below to learn more about each activity and about the speakers.

Presentations on Current Collaborative Models:

Session 1: Simone McCambridge and Caroline Keown, Southern HSC Trust ReSET Team

Bringing independent practitioners together with the health care system in Northern Ireland, Simone McCambridge and the ReSET Team in Belfast Health and Social Care Trust demonstrate their success and the future potential for this collaboration.

    Simone McCambridge

As the director of Tullynewbank Stables in Glenavy, Simone has been connecting humans and horses since 1999. Initially a riding coach, Simone has significantly developed her practice to improve both the health and well-being of humans in NI and improve the lives of her own horses. Simone is now a qualified Equine Facilitated Learning (EFL) facilitator, Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT/Tapping) and Matrix Reimprinting and a Neuro Linguistic Programming practitioner (NLP), providing a wide range of services to all who visit Tullynewbank.

Session 2: Christine Hankin, Social Worker of Coleraine GP MDT Team

This presentation will follow the collaborative journey of a Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) group and a Coleraine GP multi-disciplinary teams (MDT). Utilising the BHS Changing Lives Through Horses programme, this collaboration is an example of success with common health services and GP practices, implementing new interventions for their patients, while utilising the local facilities dedicated to EAS.

      Christine Hankin

As a director of RDA Causeway Coast & Glens Ltd since 2008, and having coached RDA for 22 years, Christine has significant experience in the provision and manging of ridden EAS within a RDA environment. More recently, Christine has qualified as a riding coach with the BHS and has been providing lessons to all ages, specialising in beginner to intermediate levels for both children and adults.

Social Worker – Coleraine GP MDT Team

Multidisciplinary Teams include professionals such as physiotherapists, mental health professionals, social workers & social work assistants, health visitors and district nurses, who work within the GP practice alongside the GP practice staff. This allows for patients to access the most appropriate services/professionals without having to be referred by a GP, thus relieving the pressure on solely GP practices.

      Presentation on Business Development

      Session 3: Chris Bogues

As an Equine Lecturer at CAFRE, Chris brings a blend of expertise in Commerce and Equine Management. With a BSc (Hons) in Commerce specialising in Business Information Systems and a Post Graduate Certificate in Equine Leadership and Management, Chris has a strong interest and a keen understanding of the diverse facets of the equine world.
